The Chemnitz State Archives is Department 4 of the Saxon State Archives. It is responsible for the records of the authorities, courts and other public bodies in the former administrative district of Chemnitz and their legal and functional predecessors.
The Chemnitz State Archives hold the archival records of individual imperial and federal authorities, of administrative and judicial authorities at the upper, middle and lower levels, of upper, middle and lower courts, of manors/knightly estates, including the Schönburg manors with a collection of documents dating back to 1233, private and state economic enterprises and economic management institutions with a focus on the textile, vehicle and mechanical engineering sectors, political parties and organisations, including the Karl-Marx-Stadt SED district party archive (including the Wismut SED regional leadership), as well as estates and collections and a library comprising around 27.000 media units. 000 media units in the library.
